A pair of large dento kokeshi dolls made by Shozo Akakarita
This is an example of the vintage dentokokeshi dolls. Kento Ogawa translated for our museum the artisan's information written on the bottom of each kokeshi doll.
Accordingly, the male figure has written only the artisan's given name: Shozo. In contrast, on the bottom of the female kokeshi figure the complete information is given - the artisan's name and surname: Shozo Akakarita.
Those types of kokeshi dolls are traditionally made as a pair. Therefore, this example has become - a way of knowing - especially helpful during the identification process when only artisan's first name is written on the bottom of both figures.
