Mrs May Chan's precious pal dolls

Mrs. Chan made an oral history recording with Mary O'Neill in January this year. The interview was held in the "Craft 4 You" shop in Hastings in the Hawkes Bay. The shop is run by Mrs Chan and her colleagues.

These ladies process knowledge of knitting and sowing in New Zealand from early times.

" Precious pals were more popular 30 years ago in Hawkes Bay", Mrs Chan said. She made and sold much more precious pal dolls back in those days. May Chan mastered them to perfection. She used to me make them to kindergarten order, and grandmothers were also her regular customers.

In this photograph May Chan holds two of her precious pal dolls that are ready to be sold
